Emerging Technologies, Emerging Markets: Are you ready for the Opportunities?

The development and application of new and emerging technologies is vital to the expansion of existing markets and indeed the opening of new market opportunities. Ensuring that these market sectors have the skilled workforce required to exploit such technologies is vital. The further education sector has a critical role to play in developing the intermediate and increasingly the higher level skills required by industry operating in sectors dependent on the application of new technologies. This report summarises the outcomes of a study led by the NEF into the extent to which FE colleges are already delivering courses (or components of courses) in emerging technologies and to pinpoint the factors which enable and inhibit the FE sectors’ state of readiness and development. This report provides an insight into how national policy interventions can stimulate concept/technology development, commercialisation and market development, and workforce development. It also explores the implications for the education and training sector and, in particular, the FE sector in responding to the emergent skills needs. "I welcome the New Engineering Foundation report, which shares my commitment to improving and extending vocational programmes through effective investment and strong links to industry. The report confirms a real need for training young people with the skills to compete in emerging and innovative new industries, both in Britain and around the world. I hope to take forward many of the ideas represented in the report in my plans for a streamlined funding system for further education, through a new Further Education Funding Council, ensuring responsiveness to business and industry” David Willetts MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Universities and Skills
