Welding and Fabrication

Date: 19 May 2013 : 10:00 - 16:00

This masterclass will highlight both new and existing technologies in welding and joining techniques. The skills shortage in this field is reportedly one of the biggest facing UK engineering companies and it is limiting growth. Industries that are seriously in need of these skills include manufacturing, communications and offshore energy, including oil & gas and renewable power.  Colleges therefore have the opportunity to meet direct employer need and attract more engineering students by introducing welding technologies into their curriculum.

Who is this masterclass for?

  • FE lecturers and curriculum managers in engineering, manufacturing, materials science and automotive departments.
  • Any lecturer interested in developing teaching and training in this key technology area.

This technology masterclass will include:

  • Technical tour of TWI Ltd facilities in Abington Cambridge.
  • Technical discussion/s relating to welding/structural integrity or industrial competence and compliance.
  • Briefing on the facilities, support and information available to lecturers through The Welding Institute and the Association for Welding and Fabrication Training and Education (AWFTE)..

Technology areas you will see and discuss on the technical tour:

Welding, Coating and Material Processing - TWI developed many of today's tried and tested techniques for arc welding, adhesive and mechanical joining, and cutting, and more recently novel advanced technologies such as friction stir welding, electron beam surface modification, automated laser cutting, cold spray deposition and sol-gel coatings.

Structural Integrity - Developing and implementing strategies to avoid the failure of advanced structures and reduce risk, eg in deepwater offshore oil and gas risers, nuclear reactors and aero engines. TWI has world-leading expertise in fatigue and fracture of welds, supported by sophisticated numerical modelling and world class integrity software packages.

Material Properties - Technologies to develop and quantify understanding of weld microstructure-property relationships; material failure modes; and weldability/process ability without introducing flaws.

Inspection - State-of-the-art expertise in a wide range of advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies, particularly long range ultrasonics, phased array, digital radiography and condition monitoring, to enhance performance and asset value without damaging the test subject.

Please note: The price of £72 + VAT is offered to FE College staff only.  Please contact us if you are not an FE College and would like to know more about costing.
