Horizon's training programmes recognised by top industry body

The quality of Horizon Nuclear Power’s training, learning and development programmes have been recognised by the NEF: The Innovation Institute and awarded Assured (Nuclear) status.

NEF, the only body to assure training in the UK nuclear industry, undertook a wide-ranging assessment of Horizon’s technical, educational and personal development courses. It found that Horizon is incorporating best practice techniques from the global industry, committed to continually improving its training learning and development offering and has well-structured mechanisms for ensuring training keeps pace with technology and industry trends.

The move comes as Horizon continues to grow its organisational capabilities alongside progressing its lead nuclear new build project, Wylfa Newydd. At present, Horizon has more than 320 employees and forecasts there will be up to 10,000 roles throughout the build programme and 850 once Wylfa Newydd, is operational in the first half of the 2020s.

Mark Salisbury, Operations Manager at Horizon, said: “We work hard to ensure our in-house training is the very best and so we’re delighted to be awarded Assured (Nuclear) status by NEF.

“It’s important for us to create an environment of continual training and development for our people. It means they not only have a firm knowledge base when they join us, but also ensures that they are constantly taking on board new information and learnings from the global nuclear community.”

NEF Chief Executive Professor Sa’ad Medhat added: “Horizon is a relatively new company, but it’s excellent to see that it has already forged a number of strong relationships with leading education providers. NEF assessors were impressed by Horizon’s exploration of a variety of different delivery methods - including auditory, visual and kinaesthetic experiences - to tailor its training and development to different learning styles.

“Horizon employees also demonstrated a strong commitment to keeping pace with developments in the global nuclear sector, ensuring that its technical, safety and compliance training remains at the forefront of international best practice. This is an exciting time for Horizon, and we will be watching the company’s expanding training operations with great interest”
